Dr Who is a permanent feature of Cardiff as it is
in the City the series is made by BBC Wales. David Tennant
is the current Dr Who.
Unfortunately I'm old enough to remember the original
series of Dr Who. I used to hide behind the settee when
the errie music came on, but was too addicted to the
TV series not to suffer the genuine fear every Saturday
evening. It was brilliant! And now Dr Who has been re-launched
by BBC Wales and has proven a huge success. For me,
well, it just doesn't scare me anymore, and is that
down to my age rather than the production? I'm not so
sure. I can see the magic continues in the new generation
of viewers. The magic is clearly to be seen in the sparkle
of childrens eyes, but I haven't seen one child hide
behind the settee as I used to. In my opinion it is
that very real terror I experienced as a child that
was the reason Dr Who was such a phenomenally huge success
in the 60's. Will the lack of truly innovative ideas
that generated that thrilling fear prove to be the difference
between this new polished production? Remember, the
new production team have all the latest wizardry of
computerised special effects at their finger tips and,
remember too, the original productions had to rely solely
on ground-breaking, totally new (at the time) and incredibly
innovative ideas to create the deeply scary threat of
the Daleks and a that very weird, strange and sincerely
frightening original title tune? |
