Cardiff Is Having A Facelift!
What with the new St. Davids shopping
centre the pedestrianisation of St. Mary Street and
the High Street up to the newly named Castle Quarter,
Cardiff is looking seriously prosperous. As a Cardiff
businessman I don't see that prosperity reaching my
pocket yet, but I live in hope. But I for one like
very much the way Cardiff is changing and growing.
I remember in the early seventies, as a teenager,
waiting outside Boots on Queen street for my sister
to finish her Saturday job at the chemists. As a family
we would all go into town to pick her up and traffic
would be streaming passed as people barged passed
us. It was bustling and busy and there was no space.
Nowadays I can walk through Cardiff and not need to
knock into anyone. The city is a much more spacious
and pleasant place to be.
But what do I miss that Cardiff has
lost since the seventies? Thayer's ice cream springs
immediately to mind! I know we still have Thayer's
ice cream, but it is jusyt not the same flavour anymore.
Thayer's would argue blind otherwise, but, to me,
the flavour has gone. I also miss the Capitol cinema
as it held wonderful memories of Saturday matinees
and it was also the place I watched my first live
band, which was Mud.
More memories to follow... ;)
